Terms of Service & Subscription Agreement

The rules for using BYOB, and the conditions of the Free, Handyman / Sub-trade and Pro Contractor plans.

Draft — pending legal review

This document describes how BYOB is designed to work. It is being reviewed by Alberta counsel and may change before the platform opens to the public.

1. This agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and BYOB ("BYOB", "we", "us") covering this website, the signed-in BYOB app and any related services (together, the "Platform"). By creating an account, subscribing to a plan or using the Platform, you agree to these terms, the Privacy Policy and the Platform Disclaimer. If you use BYOB for a business, you confirm you can bind that business.

You must be at least 18 and able to enter a binding contract in Alberta.

2. What BYOB is — and is not

BYOB is a software-as-a-service platform that connects homeowners, independent trades, contractors and service providers and gives them tools to plan, price, coordinate and record their work.

  • BYOB is not a licensed contractor, general contractor or prime contractor, and does not perform, supervise or guarantee any work.
  • BYOB is not the employer of any trade, contractor, helper or service provider. Users who work through the Platform are independent and contract directly with each other.
  • BYOB is not an insurer, lender, bank, accountant, engineer, architect, building inspector, lawyer or municipal permit authority.

Each user is responsible for the agreements they make, the work they do or commission, and their own licences, certifications, permits, insurance and WCB coverage.

3. Accounts

Keep your sign-in details secure and your profile accurate. You are responsible for activity on your account. Tell us promptly if you believe your account has been compromised.

Trades and contractors must hold the certifications their work requires. In Alberta, electrical, plumbing and gas work must be done by appropriately certified tradespeople, usually with a permit.

4. Plans and prices

All prices are in Canadian dollars. Applicable taxes, including 5% GST, are added at checkout.

  • Homeowner — $0, free forever. Project posting, milestone progress tracking, direct chat with your trades and DIY access to the Design Center. No subscription fee and no payment card required; homeowners never pay a transaction fee.
  • Handyman & Independent Sub-trade — Free Base ($0). Project dispatch, quote submissions, receipt OCR scanning and, once the milestone escrow rail launches, milestone payouts subject to the escrow processing fee in section 5.
  • Handyman & Independent Sub-trade — Pro Power-Up ($29 per month). Everything in the Free Base, with escrow processing fees waived on your milestone payouts, plus custom branded PDF estimates and batch OCR receipt processing when those features are released.
  • Pro Contractor & Builder — Free Base ($0). Basic multi-trade management, milestone creation and jobsite chat; milestone payouts are subject to the escrow processing fee in section 5.
  • Pro Contractor & Builder — Pro Power-Up ($99 per month). Everything in the Free Base and the sub-trade Power-Up, with escrow processing fees waived, plus full access to the BYOB Design Center & Architectural Center (blueprint ingestion, takeoff tools, material selectors), Alberta lien holdback calculations and OHS safety notices.

Each plan covers one user account, and its features are available on that account only. We may set reasonable limits on free accounts (for example, number of active projects or storage) and will show them in the app.

Features marked "Coming soon" are not part of any plan until they are released. Interactive previews on this website use sample data and are not the paid service.

5. Billing, renewal and cancellation

  • Paid plans are billed monthly in advance and renew automatically each month until cancelled.
  • You can cancel at any time in your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep paid features until then.
  • Payments already made are not refundable for partial months, except where the law requires a refund.
  • Upgrades take effect immediately. Any proration is shown before you confirm. Downgrades take effect at the start of the next billing period.
  • If a payment fails, we will tell you and retry. If it still fails, your account moves to the free Base plan; your records stay available, but paid features are locked until payment is made.
  • We may change plan prices or features with at least 30 days’ notice by email or in the app. A price change applies from your next billing period after the notice period ends, and you can cancel before then.

Escrow processing fee: once the milestone escrow rail launches, payouts to sub-trades and contractors on a Free Base plan carry an escrow processing fee of 1.5% to 2% of each milestone payout. The exact fee is shown before the payout is made, is deducted from it, and appears on its own receipt. Payouts to Pro Power-Up plans carry no escrow processing fee, and homeowners never pay one. BYOB adds no percentage markup to labour or materials.

6. Payments, holdbacks and records

Where the Platform processes or records payments between users, amounts are calculated in whole cents. Percentages are applied in integer arithmetic and rounded half away from zero, so every figure in a ledger, invoice or receipt adds up exactly.

Holdback, lien, tax and safety features help you follow your obligations under Alberta law; they do not take those obligations over. See the Platform Disclaimer for details.

7. Acceptable use

Do not use the Platform to break the law, mislead or harass anyone, post content you have no right to share, upload malware, scrape or overload the service, get around plan limits or security, or impersonate another person or business.

8. Your content

You keep ownership of what you upload — photos, plans, receipts, messages and records. You give BYOB a limited licence to host, process and display that content only as needed to run the Platform for you and the people you share it with.

You are responsible for having the right to upload plans and drawings, including any copyright held by architects or designers.

9. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

The Platform is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, BYOB is not liable for the work, conduct, products or payments of any user, or for indirect, incidental or consequential losses. BYOB’s total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid BYOB in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under Alberta consumer protection law that cannot be waived.

10. Suspension, changes and governing law

We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms or put other users at risk. We may update these terms; for material changes we will give at least 30 days’ notice. These terms are governed by the laws of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, and disputes go to the courts of Alberta.

11. DIY tools and partner services

The free Homeowner plan includes DIY tools such as the Design Center. BYOB also plans to offer, as they are released:

  • ordering materials from a takeoff directly through supplier partners;
  • links to tool rental partners; and
  • on-demand video consultations with licensed professionals.

These services will be provided by independent suppliers, rental companies and professionals under their own terms and prices. BYOB may earn a referral fee or commission when you use them; we will disclose that before you buy. BYOB does not sell, deliver or warrant partner products, and a video consultation is general guidance — not an inspection, design, engineering opinion or permit approval.

Contact details for privacy and legal requests will be published here before launch.
