Privacy Policy

What BYOB collects, why, and how receipts, blueprints and project records are handled and protected.

Draft — pending legal review

This document describes how BYOB is designed to work. It is being reviewed by Alberta counsel and may change before the platform opens to the public.

This document is currently available in English only.

1. Scope

This policy explains how BYOB handles personal information on this website and in the signed-in app. We follow Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and, where it applies, the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

2. What we collect

  • Launch-update sign-ups on this website: your name, email, which pathway you’re interested in, optionally the first three characters of your postal code, your language, and a record of your consent. We never ask for your full postal code here.
  • Account information: name, contact details, role (homeowner, trade or contractor), business details, certifications and WCB status where needed.
  • Project records: scopes, milestones, messages, photos, selections, approvals, invoices, payments, receipts and safety records you or your collaborators create.
  • Billing information for paid plans, handled by our payment processor; BYOB does not store full card numbers.
  • Technical information: the language and theme you choose (stored in your browser) and standard server logs used to keep the service secure.

3. How we use it

We use personal information to provide and secure the Platform, run your projects and payments, send the updates you asked for, meet legal and tax obligations, and improve the service. We do not sell personal information. Marketing emails are sent only with your consent, and every email has an unsubscribe link.

4. Receipt OCR

When you scan a receipt in the app, the image is uploaded to your project and BYOB records its file type, size, a fingerprint (hash) and when it was captured. Automated text recognition (OCR) suggests the vendor, subtotal, GST, PST and total.

Nothing is issued from OCR alone: you review and confirm the figures before a receipt is created and posted to the project’s tax ledger. Receipt images and figures are kept with the project as part of its financial record and are visible to the project members you share them with.

5. Blueprint and plan security

  • Design Center PDF viewer on this website: PDFs open and render on your own device. They are not uploaded to BYOB.
  • AI Takeoff upload on this website: the file (PDF, DWG or DXF, up to 4 MB) is sent to BYOB only to check its type and count PDF pages, then discarded when the request ends. It is not stored, shared or used to train any model. The takeoff figures shown in the preview are simulated.
  • Plans in the signed-in app are stored with your project and shared only with the project members you invite.

6. Who we share with

Information is shared with the people you work with on a project, as you direct, and with service providers that help us run the Platform — such as hosting, database, email, payment processing and AI model providers — under contracts that limit their use of it. Some providers may process information outside Canada; when they do, it is subject to the laws of those countries. We disclose information to authorities only when the law requires it.

If you choose a partner service — supplier ordering, tool rental or a video consultation — we share only what that partner needs to provide it, such as your order details or a contact name, and only when you ask us to.

7. Security and retention

Project records, documents and payment details are encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is limited to project members and staff who need it. We keep information for as long as your account is active and as long afterwards as tax, lien, safety and other laws require; financial and safety records may need to be kept for several years.

8. Your choices and rights

You can ask to see or correct your personal information, withdraw consent to marketing at any time, and ask us to delete information we no longer need to keep. You can also contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.

Contact details for privacy and legal requests will be published here before launch.
