Give each milestone the specialist it needs and a clear scope. Each milestone becomes its own quote request to the verified pros you choose. Accepting a request doesn't award the work: you compare quotes and fund the milestone in escrow before work starts.

Before you hire

  • Important: Alberta workplace safety

Work booked through BYOB is a work site under Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act and Code. Before work starts, the trade completes a hazard assessment (BYOB's daily FLHA) and uses the protective equipment the job needs. Fall protection is required where a worker could fall 3 metres or more. Every worker has the right to know about hazards, to take part in safety decisions, and to refuse dangerous work. BYOB checks WCB coverage and required safety tickets before a trade or helper can be dispatched or check in.

  • Important: Certified trades only

In Alberta, electrical, plumbing and gas work must be done by appropriately certified tradespeople, usually with a permit. Express Handyman does not take these jobs. BYOB can help you find a certified trade instead.

  • Important: Dust, noise and rooms out of use

Renovation brings dust, noise, fumes and rooms you can’t use for a while. BYOB’s cautions show what each phase is likely to involve and the controls to expect, so you can plan your household around the work. They are guidance, not a safety assessment: the trade assesses the site’s hazards and decides the controls. Keep children, pets and anyone with breathing problems out of areas marked restricted or keep-out, and follow the trade’s instructions before entering a work area.

  • Important: Who is the prime contractor?

Alberta’s OHS rules require a prime contractor on a work site where two or more employers work at the same time. If you hire more than one trade to work at your home at once and haven’t agreed in writing that one of them, or a general contractor, is the prime contractor, that responsibility can fall to you as the owner. When you hire several trades through BYOB, agree in writing who the prime contractor is before work starts.

  • Notice: Trades are independent businesses

Trades and contractors on BYOB are independent businesses, not BYOB employees or agents. Each is responsible for their own work, workers, insurance, WCB coverage and site safety. BYOB checks credentials at set points (WCB clearance, insurance, safety tickets, trade certificates) but does not supervise the work or guarantee its quality.
